After 16 long years, and a couple close calls, Dr. Dre is putting out a new album. Compton A Soundtrack comes out this Friday, August 7th, a week before the debut of its film counterpart, the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.
This is Dr. Dre’s first album since 1999’s The Chronic 2001, although over the years he’s been consistently rumored to be hard at work on the now mythical album Detox.
Dre broke the news on his Beats 1 Radio Show The Pharmacy and also revealed Detox’s
fate, saying, “I didn't like it. It wasn't good. The record, it just
wasn't good…I worked my ass off on it, and I don't think I did a good
enough job.”
Dr. Dre’s new album has an A-list
roster and it’s tracklist on iTunes shows contributions from Kendrick
Lamar on a song called “Genocide," alongside features from Eminem, Snoop
Dogg, and former N.W.A. member Ice Cube.
Obviously, with all the hype,
expectations are sky high. But the attached biopic is already receiving
some pretty positive early reviews. RottenTomatoes so far has it rated at 90% and Variety called it “a feast for hip-hop connoisseurs and novices alike."
