A 'Grey's Anatomy' return is making fans lose their minds

Warning: This post contains details about the latest episode of Grey's Anatomy. Beware of spoilers.
Sorry to bring this up, but remember when Derek Shepherd died?
I know, I know. It's a sensitive subject. But this is important.
In that episode, "How to Save a Life," we met an unnamed female doctor (Samantha Sloyan) who was the sole voice of reason as the incapable surgeons in a rural hospital treated Derek, who unbeknownst to them was conscious, unable to speak, and calling them out on their terrible doctoring. ("I'm going to die because these people aren't properly trained," he thought at one point.)
Their mistakes, essentially, caused Derek to succumb to his injuries.
In that episode, the nameless doctor apologized to Meredith for not being good enough to save her husband. And Meredith gave her a pep talk — despite the fact that her husband had literally just died.
Meredith told the doctor to learn from the mistake and be better for the next patient.

Well, in Thursday's new episode, we found out this doctor's name was Penny.
Penny is Callie's new girlfriend.
Fans reacted accordingly to seeing this Ghost of TV's Most Horrible Day Ever Past, who showed up in the closing minutes of Thursday's episode as Callie's date to a dinner party at Meredith's house.
They. Were. Not. Happy.
The return was extra poetic in that special Grey's Anatomy way because earlier in the episode Meredith had a stunning speech where she told the interns that it was important to choose the right words when telling people that their loved ones have died. As she explained, the person on the receiving end of those words is going to remember your face for the rest of their lives.
How right she was.
