Economics Aside, 'Star Wars: Episode IX' Will Be Shot With Film, Says Director Colin Trevorrow

At a panel on the benefits of film Thursday night at Sundance Film Festival, Star Wars’ director Colin Trevorrow announced that he will shoot Episode IX with film instead of digital.
Fellow panelists – and proponents for film - were the cinematographer of Fruitvale Station, Rachel Morrison, and the highly acclaimed, Christopher Nolan.  Their comments are crucial during a time when studios argue that digital is cheaper and easier to use than film, and many theaters are moving toward using only digital projectors.
While Tervorrow called for directors to not let celluloid become an antiquated novelty item like vinyl, Nolan asserted that there is a “corporate conspiracy” to “kill film.”
Nolan spoke of technical issues that happened when Quentin Tarantino invested millions of dollars to show The Hateful Eight on film projectors. Nolan pointed out that digital projectors can also break, and even furthered that digital is not always cheaper than film in the long run.
With his blockbusters like Interstellar and Inception - which grossed over $650 million and $825.5 million worldwide, respectively – being shot with film, Nolan is indisputably a valuable voice in the debate.
