NEW YORK — Jaguar and Porsche, Mazda just bested you at your own game. And with a Miata no less.

The stunning thing you see above — slathered in
Mazda's new Machine Gray paint — is called the MX-5 RF. The RF roughly
stands for retractable hardtop. It's also a fastback... so maybe that's
where the "F" comes from? Either way, I love it.The roof top electronically folds away with the push of a button in seconds — even with the car driving up to speeds of 6 mph. Though, I suspect you'll want to pull over to put the top down rather than continue ahead at 5 mph and risk infuriating drivers behind you.
Otherwise, it's a normal MX-5 powered by a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 155 horsepower. The power from that is routed to the rear wheels either through a manual or automatic transmission.
This new take on the old-school removable "targa" top sports car is frankly an unexpected move from Mazda. We'd expected a new hardtop Miata, sure. However, we didn't see anything this stunning coming.
Sure, it might not be as fast as the Jag or the Porsche 911 Targa, but at least it will be a lot more affordable and nearly as fun to drive.
Kudos, Mazda.
