Two female championship bouts are set to headline UFC 193 tomorrow night. Tune in to support women in sport.
Yet another Ultimate Fighting Championship event is down to make history on December 14th. UFC 193: Rousey vs Holm, which takes place in Melbourne, Australia, is a big deal for females in the sport as the champions in both of the women's weight classes will be taking to the Octagon to defend their titles.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk, the strawweight champion, has been making waves on the mixed martial arts scene since joining the UFC over a year ago, and after winning the title in March, has been the name on every fan's lips. Her aggressive style – which favours striking – is compelling, exciting and near flawless, while her calm composure and funny, friendly nature in interviews has only added to her likeability.
Nicknamed 'Joanna Champion' as a result of broadcasters having trouble pronouncing her surname, the Polish native will be taking on Canada's Valerie Letourneau, also a talented striker. The two fighters' styles match up well in what's set to be a fast-paced war.
The main event on Saturday will feature the sport's biggest star, Ronda Rousey, who is no stranger to making history. Not only did the American take part in the first female bout in the UFC, but she is also the organisation's first ever female champion. She's also a true crossover star, bagging roles in blockbuster movies like Furious 7 and Entourage as well as interviews on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The Olympic medallist in judo has blazed a trail for women in MMA, a sport that Rousey herself believes is the only combat art to offer a potential career for women.
Her opponent, however, is not to be overlooked. Though it might be difficult to imagine Rousey without a championship belt around her waist, Holly Holm is a force to be reckoned with. The former professional boxer and kickboxer has held titles in both sports (in boxing she has defended her titles 18 times) and has been a highly anticipated player in the bantamweight division which Rousey currently rules.
Check out the fighters live in action on BT Sport 2 this Sunday morning (15th December) at 3am.
