It might be Arnie's most iconic role but it
seems Paramount have recognised that the appetite for new films in the
franchise is fast disappearing.
The studios revealed on Wednesday that the sequel to
Terminator Genisys, due to be called Terminator 2, has been taken off
its release calendar. The date of 19 May, 2017, has now been filled by Baywatch, a TV reboot starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.
The most recent chapter, which opened last summer, was viewed as a disappointment after taking just $90m in the US and $440m worldwide.
The bulk of 2015's box office takings came from China but even that is not enough for Paramount to go ahead with the next film.
In 2014, producers set out dates for Terminator 2 and a Terminator 3 film, which would have been released in 2018.
James Cameron, the creator of the original films will re-acquire the rights to the franchise in 2019.
Although he is busy with the Avatar films, he may choose to relaunch Terminator again himself.
