Valentine’s Day is going to surpass the football craze with total spending set to hit a record $19.7 billion, according to the National Retail Federation. Some 54.8 percent of Americans are expected to celebrate the holiday this year, with candy, greeting cards and an evening out at the top of the gift list. As usual, men are set to spend significantly more than women on their spouses/significant others. The average man will spend $133.61 on gifts this year compared to $62.14 for women. This Sunday, countless loved-up couples are going to do something romantic to mark Valentine’s Day. Whether that involves catching a movie or heading out for a meal, Americans are set to spend a lot of money this weekend. Last Sunday was already incredibly lucrative for the US economy with Super Bowl viewers splashing out over $15 billion on everything from team apparel to food and parties.
